Helpmate
Beau and I might have been the same on how we contemplate major news, but I wasn’t so sure how to explain helpmates. It’s a concept most find hard to grasp. It would’ve help me if I knew more about him, but a glance at my watch told me I was running out of time. Sham would’ve contacted Jag and TeaLeaf the moment I hung up, which meant they’d be here within an hour. Their requirement of always being within an hour flying distance of this town made sense.
“You going to answer me?” Beau skipped his last stone.
“I would’ve taken you from this place because of who you are to me.”
“Hold up, you’re not this elusive TeaLeaft are you?”
I chuckled and grinned at Beau. “Not hardly.  Besides our amazing battle skills, determination, loyalty to friends and family, dire need to protect we have very little in common.”
“Sounds like quite a lot.”
Beau had a point. TeaLeaf and I might not always see eye-to-eye on most things, but in the end we are always working toward the same goal. We just approach things from different angles.
“I’ll give you that in some aspect. But when it comes to our need to protect and care for you they are two totally different reasons. And, I would’ve handled things different than TeaLeaf did.”
Beau retook his seat on the fallen log and stared at me. It hadn’t been meant to stir my libido, but having his eyes on me had me harder than a fucking brick. I shifted in my seat and tried to avoid looking at him. It was working, but it was also made me lose my concentration on my surrounding and Beau somehow managed to find a way to kneel in front of me without me taking note of movement.
“Is what you are about to tell me going to explain why I feel this stake through the chest type of need to touch you? Is it going to explain my dick is stiff enough to break a board when I’m around you? Is it going to enlighten me on the reason why when I saw you beside Officer Swift I wanted to hack the man’s balls off? Although, he’s always been a pain in my ass, but never to the point of wanting to harm him.”
Beau’s questions forced me to adjust the ridge pressing against my jeans. The movement caught Beau’s eyes and his forward response was much appreciated. He slid his hand up and over my leg, resting his hand over the one I’d been using to redirect my prick. I slipped my hand from under his and let him take over the job. The touch was tentative, but had me thrusting into it before I could wrap my hand around Beau’s neck.
“Damn, what a steel rod.” Beau licked his lips. “Bet it’ll taste wonderful.”
My eyes darted down to his glistening lower lip and I inhaled, taking in his masculine scent. I’d love to taste him. Wanted to taste him. Needed to taste him. But . . . Beau didn’t have a clue as to why he was drawn to me. He needed to. I needed him to, because I want my helpmate to understand and accept me for who I am, not just because of our way of life.
“I’d love for that, but . . .”
Beau sat back on his heels and grinned up at me. “Go on.”
The at ease, unoffended way in which Beau spoke clued me into what Beau had been doing. My helpmate was a resourceful one. He knew how to watch out for himself in ways that most wouldn’t consider.
“Guess this means I passed your test?” I ran the pad of my thumb over his lower lip after he gave a brief nod. “Good. What I’m about to tell you is pure truth and I hope you are fond, very, very fond of the concept where I’m concerned.”
If Beau wasn’t then my life was screwed every which way to moon and back.
“Can’t say until I hear you out.”
“Bare with me, I’ve never thought I’d be the one to explain such a thing to anyone. Let alone the man who means more to me than . . . Well, I’m getting a head of myself.” I ran a hand over my face and decided sticking with the common human concept of helpmates would be my best option. “Do you believe in the concept of true love, a perfect match, or love at first sight?”
“I’ve heard of it. Never had the chance to witness or . . .” Beau grinned and hung his head.
Beau’s embarrassment shined with such an innocent move, which meant I’d be teaching my helpmate how to shield his emotions.
“You ever heard of Helpmates?” Beau shook his head no. “Each supernatural creature is blessed with a helpmate. Basically, they are the person who completes us. Fits with us. Settles our second form. Or as some humans would consider us soul mates.”
Beau didn’t look up at me, instead he kept his attention on the ground and new blade of grass. It made me a bit hesitant about diving further into our conversation, but I knew it had to be done. For his sake and mind.

“A supernatural creature can’t purposefully harm, cheat, or lie to their helpmate. Our ultimate goal is to protect, love, cherish, and provide for them.” I used my finger to tilt his head so I could look him in the eyes. “You are my helpmate, that is why I couldn’t have left you with Captain Stone.”
