Zebra
The seven foot man yanked the scarf away from his face, earning a gasp from Jag and Chief Parker.
“Rave Mitchel. I’d shake your hand if I knew your end game in all of this.” A grin split my face, but I wasn’t sure if it was for his unexpected arrival or him sending me to Dav Community.
“I’d pay you the honor you are due, if I knew you hadn’t put my son in so much danger.” TeaLeaf huffed and tossed his head at me. “I’d let my son out or step aside if you value your life.”
“Why?” I winked at Tealeaf. “I like him safely tucked away.”
“You might not if that ray of sunlight gets any brighter.” Sham stepped away “Or, we could open the door and let it zap these four rat bastards.”
“Wouldn’t kill them.” Rave Mitchel slapped a pair of magical cuffs on Ronald and the other four Spirit Council members were cuffed by the other guys with Rave. “Ying and Yang are immune to Demon Travelers. Just like we are.”
Ronald’s head whipped around. “You can’t be. Only . . .”
“That’s right. Only the Zebra race and your filthy murdering kind are stronger than Demon Delivers.” Rave shoved Ronald over to one of his other guys then faced TeaLeaf. “How did you know I was due honor?”
“Zebra race wasn’t forgotten by all.” TeaLeaf gave a small bow. “My family passed your story down to each generation. I’m afraid I feared being able to do so with my own son, but today I was able to.”
Rave frowned and then motioned for me to come forward. “I promise I am no threat to you or your helpmate. I would like to make my apology to everyone at once, if I may.”
“Apology?” I stepped aside and Beau rushed out of the closet.
“Vain, be ready to . . .” TeaLeaf shook his head as Beau shot from the closet.
Beau darted toward the Spirit Council, but I caught him by the shirttail. He whipped his head around at me and then lowered his head when I scowled at him.
“They are secure and won’t hurt me or your dad.” I kissed his nose and then nuzzled it. He threw his arms around my neck. “Let’s listen to Rave and see if he can fill us in a bit more.”
“Fine, but he best have a damn good reason or I’ll find someway to harm his Zebra ass.” Beau glared at Rave, who had the gall to smile at Beau, which irked me enough I snarled at him until he diverted his eyes.
“Sorry.” Rave motioned towards the chairs. “I’ll start with how I survived the Ying and Yang deadly attack.” He focused on Ronald. “I was my father’s eldest son. No one knew about me, because my mother refused to join him on X-on and he didn’t want to separate her from me. He came to see me often, even left me a will, which was delivered to me the day X-on buried him.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. The ruler of X-on had a human lover, which as far as I knew was a major no-no for our kind. Or it had been since the Spirit Council took control. Might have been different back then.
“I spent years among years rebuilding my race and hunting a way to gain revenge for my father and his chosen woman.” Rave sighed. “Took me way longer than I hoped, but when I ran across this young man,” he pointed at Beau, “I knew what had to be done.”
“Fuck.” TeaLeaf jumped to his feet. “You knew my son was in danger and you let him remain in those bastards hands.”
Jag was tugging on Tealeaf’s arm, but only half heartedly. It might have been Jag’s way of refraining from attacking a supernatural creature ten times stronger than him.
“I did and for that I’m sorry. I realized the best way to gain my revenge was to unite young Beau with his helpmate.” Rave threw his hand up, cutting off my interruption. “Vain, I apologizes for keeping you away from him for so long. I had to make sure there were a few of my own race around to ensure we had all the Ying and Yang present.”
“How did you know Beau was my helpmate?” I asked.
“One of my gifts is to know who each supernatural belongs to.” Rave shrugged and faced TeaLeaf. “I knew Beau was a Demon Deliver, but I had no clue until the other day that he was the son of the legendary TeaLeaf. If I had, I would’ve reached out to Sham before I sent Vain to town.”
Beau ran his hand over his face and shook his head. “When did you find me?”
Vain squeezed Beau, but wasn’t sure if that relieved his helpmate or not. Wasn’t even sure if it helped me or not. I could’ve been with Beau for a whole, but the situation could’ve been a hell of a lot worse if I’d came rushing down here a year ago. I would’ve been caught and TeaLeaf would’ve as well. Which meant most of the people living in the underworld would’ve died before every reaching X-on again.
“What is your plan next?” I asked.
“I’m going to take control of X-on and put it right.” Rave answered as if he had indeed thought about this for many years.
“What does that mean exactly?” Chief Parker crossed his arms. “Because I’ll tell you some of us don’t mind living on Earth. Never did, but we didn’t feel it was right for any of our kind to be forced to come here.”
Rave grinned. “I love Earth. Hate what they have done to it. I’ll be working with the humans to create a better compromise between us and them. Put safe guards in place for the ones who wishes to stay on Earth. The ones who wish to go home, is free to do so. There I’ll be reinserting the old ways of life, where they have a say of how X-on is ran.”
It sounded as if Rave was going to give TeaLeaf, Jag, Sham, and me what we’d been working towards since the Gutting War ended. I longed to return to X-on, but I wouldn’t if Beau didn’t want to go. My life was with him and that wouldn’t change for nothing.
Beau must have been linked to me because he leaned back and said, “I’d love to see this X-on and maybe even spend some time over there with you. Never know I may love the place. After all, I love you and as long as have you I’ll be happy.”
“Words to steel my heart.” I kissed his neck and we sat there while Rave and his men took the ex-Spirit Council away
“Guess, this means we’ll all be returning to X-on soon.” Sham looked at them all.
“For a few days at least.” Chief Parker patted Sham’s hand.
“That’s the future.” Beau pushed away from me and took hold of my hand. “For now, me and Vain are going to go enjoy the present.”

Ying and Yang
“And you won’t.” Ronald, the eldest Spirit Council member aimed a small pistol at Sham’s computer and fired.
TeaLef, Jag, and me snarled at them all. Sham and Chief Parker gaped at the shattered computer for a second before they whipped their head around and roared at Ronald and the other four. The faint yellow flowing from Sham and Chief Parker alerted all suprenatrual creatures of a pending shift. It also had me sending out a fragment of myself. I tried to pull on the Spirit Council magic I possessed, but found the connection broken.
I was laughing before I knew it, which drew the attention to everyone and did the trick I had been planning on doing with the magic, stopping Sham and Chief Parker’s shift.
“Vain, Vain, did you truly think I’d entered here with you still in possession of your Spirit Council magic.” Ronald sneered at him.
I crossed my arms and leaned against the closet door, mainly to pin it shut since I could feel Beau’s impending entrance. Kinnely, the next to eldest Spirit Council member, who reminded me of a bull shifter when he mocked my stance, but sounded like a teenage boy stuck between his boyhood voice and his manly one, must have thought I was contemplating an attack. He lifted his gun and aimed it at me.
I grinned back at him and let my hand slip under my shirt. “You do realize how dangerous aiming a gun at me is?” I nodded toward my hand, which now held one of Sham’s homemade sleep gas bombs.
“Where did . . .”
“Dumb ass.” Ronald pushed Kinnley’s gun down. “We came here to eliminate traitors, not have them take us out.”
TeaLeaf and Jag huffed, but I saw their hands slipping behind their backs, where I knew at least a knife or a gun hid.
“Why take us out? All of us have done your dirty work.” I shrugged. “Infact, we were four of your top ten fighters.”
“Vain, dear friend, you might have been.” Ronald shook his finger at me. “But, you betrayed us. Turned your back on us.”
“How so?” I knew what he was talking about, but since he was in a talking mood I was going to get some verification of what I’d been thinking.
“You created the underground world.” A red headed Spirit Council member, which I didn’t know the name of. Kind of odd, I had met each of them at some point over the years, but his name escaped me.
“You are undermining the main reason we came here.” Adam, the youngest member of the Spirit Council stepped around Kinnely. “Why would you do this?”
“And how does assisting supernatural creatures wanting to go back to their homelands undermined you overtaking a land you’ve done gain control over.” I pushed against the closest door when it pressed into my back.
“You might as well let TeaLeaf’s son join us.” Ronald motioned for me to step aside.
“Don’t think so.” TeaLeaf said.
“Why not? We’d stashed him to gain access to TeaLeaf, but TeaLeaf let others oversee of his son. Why would you do such a cowardly thing?” Ronald kept motioning for me to step aside, but I waved the little sleep gas bomb I held.
“My goal was to give my son a happy, safe, long life. Not lead my enemies to him.” TeaLeaf made a step towards Ronald, but Jag gripped his arm.
“Your lack of checking on him caused his misery filled life.” Ronald shrugged. “If you’d shown up I would’ve taken you and let him go live a peaceful life with the man his mother deemed fitting to raise her child.”
“Looks like waiting for you to show up allowed us to take out all the leaders of the underworld world.” Kinnely chuckled. “Better for us. Thanks.”
Vain banged his head against the door and Beau ceased trying to get out. “I’m still waiting to understand why the underworld would undermine your control over this world.”
“You’re so naïve.” The red headed Spirit Council member rolled his eyes.
“Enlighten us then.” I said.
“Vain, Vain. Why would I do such a stupid thing?” Ronald shoved the red headed guy back. “Keep your mouth shut, I run this show. You know that.”
“Why is that?” I barely suppressed my smile at how easy it had been to get them to start fighting among themselves.
“Because,” Ronald thumped his chest, “I’m the eldest Ying and Yang left alive. I myself am responsible for eliminating all peon’s and infestations among X-on and our secondary world.”
“But you didn’t succeed in ridding X-on of all Zebra’s did you?” TeaLeaf moved in front of Jag.
“He didn’t.” Sham said and moved to lean beside me. “I believe that’s why he wanted to control Earth.”
“How’d they find out all this?” Kinnely glanced at Ronald, who was tapping his weapon.
“Does ‘t matter.” Ronald aimed his gun. “All of them - - -”

I watched on as a seven foot, body builder man gracefully walked into the room, with four other men. They were in full army duds. Outfits I hadn’t seen since the Gutting War ended. Kind of freaked me out for a minute before the guys placed their guns against the temple of the each of the Spirit Council.

X-on’s Secret
“He’s a direct descendant of the very first supernatural creature. Most don’t know of their existence. They were believed to have died long before our current leaders took over. I’m not quiet sure why the new leaders decided to make their existence a X-on Secret.”
My mouth fell open and I closed my eyes. This wasn’t possible. The Spirit Council had been around for almost a millennium and half.
“Then how do you know about them?” Beau wasn’t as stunned as the rest of us. Didn’t surprise me since he knew very little about his own race.
“The story was passed down to me by grandfather and father.” TeaLeaf sighed. “I would’ve passed it down to you.”
“Then do so know.” Beau sat up as straight as he could in my lap and smield at TeaLeaf.
I wasn’t sure if it was Beau’s smile or the glow his request put on TeaLeaf’s face that made me the happiest. Beau had accepted TeaLeaf as his father and was trying to make up some of their lost time. Funny how it was being done during unraveling loads of secrets.
“The Zebra race was the first supernatural born and ruled X-on from get go. As more and more races sprang up from the unknown or traveled to X-on the more they were respected. The Zebra race was gentle, caring, and giving. They always put the health of others ahead of their own needs. They let the races vote and make decisions about X-on as a whole.” TeaLeaf shook his head. “Like most races there were some who disliked their approach of leadership. One day an enemy broke their protective walls and eliminated the last living one. He had not yet bore any children, so the raced . . .”
“Okay,” Vain didn’t understand why TeaLeaf thought Rave Mitchel was one of them if their race ended in the attack. “Why does Rave Mitchel having a Zebra birthmark make you think him one?”
“Who cares right now?” Beau elbowed him. “Finish the story. Did they find out who attacked them?” Beau wiggled and leaned forward a bit.
“Yeah, Vain, let TeaLeaf finish his story.” Sham chuckled and Jag buried his head in TeaLeaf’s neck.
“Fine.” I pinched Beau’s hip. “No more elbowing me.”
“Then hush and let him answer me.” Beau leaned back.
“Rumor was the Ying and Yang race, but there was never any proof since the entire fortress the Zebra lived in was burned to the ground.” TeaLeaf held his hands up. “That’s all I know of the story.”
“Damn.” Beau looked back at me. “Now you can get your answer.”
“Really, what if I want something else.” I claimed his lips and he moaned.
“I’ll give - - -“
“Stay on track.” TeaLeaf huffed and mumbled something below my hearing. I was sure it was a plea not to see his son making out with his helpmate.
I broke the kiss and squeezed Beau against my chest. “Why does Rave Mitchel having a Zebra birthmark make you think him one?”
“Every member of the Zebra race was known by their birthmark.”
“Who was the Ying and Yang race?” Sham was speed typing on his computer. “I can’t find a damn thing about them.”

“Incoming!” I sprang to my feet and pushed Beau toward the closet. He snarled at me, but didn’t argue when I shut him away just as our room door was busted down and the top five Spirit Council members stormed in.

Winning Point
Once again mine and Beau’s room was full. Once again it was up to me to point out another unproven theory regarding the situation we all found ourselves in. I just hoped one of my theories would lead us to some hardcore facts or the end of the entire mystery of how Beau became stashed and who was after him. Or if it was him they were after at all. I truly doubted it was. Felt more like he was a means to a bigger fish.
“Beau said you had more points to make.” TeaLeaf kicked his legs out and tugged Jag into his lap.
“Yes.”
“Going off your gut again?” Sham winked at him. “Never failed us yet.”
“Vain,” Beau wrapped his arm around my neck. “Tell them, it’s not as far fetched as you think.”
“Here’s what I’m thinking.” I sighed and prayed he was right. “Don’t think the Spirit Council expected the false Captain Stone to be discovered.”
“Why not?” Jag swung his legs over the arm of TeaLeaf’s chair.
“Not logical. Why would they send me here, the one they claim is best at uncovering secrets.” I shrugged. “I think Rave Mitchel sent me here without their knowledge.”
“How? I can’t even pull off such a task.” Sham looked at Chief Parker. “Vain said he was to report to you. Did you have a heads up about him coming?”
Chief Parker nodded. “Kind of confused me, because it wasn’t from you. Figured one of the other local supernatural creatures reported Captain Stone and his police officers before I found evidence of his abuse of power.”
“Let’s not get off point.” I was sure Captain’s Stone’s abuse of powers had nothing to do with the issue at hand. “The key in all this is Rave Mitchel. I admit I know nothing about this man. Never heard his name.”
Sham yanked his computer out and began typing. It wouldn’t take him long to dig up the nitty-gritty on the man, but until then the room was silent. Beau rested his head on my shoulder, while the others was most likely debating what I’d told them. None would make a final assessment until they knew more about Rave Mitchel, but . . . forming ideas and possible scenarios always helped the foursome squad gage their ability to adapt in unexpected situations.
“Here’s a photo of him. There’s very little info on him in the database. From what I can tell he enlisted into the Spirit Council right after we started the underground world.”
“Zoom in on him shoulder.” TeaLeaf stood with Jag in his arm and then sat him down in his seat. “Stay.”
“Hey, I’m not a dog.” Jag swatted TeaLeaf on the ass as he moved toward the projected photo of Rave Mitchel.
“Get a bit closer.” TeaLeaf tilted his head from side to side a couple of times and drew a square around one section of the photo. “Can you zoom in right there?”
I watched in silence, but studied the area TeaLeaf inspected. There was a tattoo of a Zebra. Kind of a strange animal for a man to have, but to each there own. Question was, why did it draw TeaLeaf’s attention.
TeaLeaf tapped the area and faced them all. “This isn’t just any ole supernatural creature.”
“Why you say that?” Sham went to the screen and studied the blowup section.
“The Zebra.”
Beau lifted his head and scrunched his face. “A tattoo makes him special?”
“Not a tattoo.” TeaLeaf went back to his chair and retook his seat under Jag.
“What is it then?” Beau’s full attention was on the screen.
“Birthmark.”
“How? That’s a perfect shape and color. Birthmarks aren’t so precise.”
“It’s what makes him who he is.”
“And just who is that?” My aggravation at being out of the loop was catching up to me and it was coming across in my sharp tone.
“An X-on Secret.”
I groaned at the fact of yet another secret to unravel. At least this time we had someone who could explain it to us. I just hoped he had some visual proof or something.

“And what is that?” I asked.
