Phrase Scene

NaNoWriMo is over and for the fourth year in a row, I won. That means that I know have three stories ready for revisions. Looks like next year might be a great year for me when getting books ready for publication.

Still, that is next year. This is still 2017, meaning I have to focus on now, and right now, it is time to write a scene. Phrase for the week is Stuff it. One I hope you enjoy and one that allows your imagination soar.

Have a great week.

Raphael took another look around the place he’d called home for the last ten years. The Combs had been in his life longer than anyone else. He loved them. They told him they loved him. Lies. All lies on their part. Raphael had loved Mr. and Mrs. Combs. They’d been there for him during the most trying times of his life. His mother’s death. His grandmother’s rejection. His father’s point blank denial of him. He never once saw an ounce of prejuicde in them. Why did they? How could they? He was still the same human. Same young man. Same person who came to their door when he was eight years old.
“Raphael, man, you ready?”
No. He was no ready to leave the one place he felt safe. Not that he dreaded moving in with Jake. He loved Jake. The two of them had spoken many times about them taking their relationship to the next level, but Raphael had not expected it so soon. He’d wanted to finish college first.
“Come on, man.”
Raphael reached up and let his hand rest against Jake’s cheek as he rested his head on Rapael’s shoulder. “I can’t believe this.”
“I know man, but they made their selves clear.”
Boy had they. The moment Mr. Combs came in and found Raphael kissing Jake, the entire atmosphere had shifted from loving and caring to rage and disgust. The two had words, harsh and unforgettable words, but the last words Mr. Combs had said to him was the cruelest and drifted through Raphael’s mind every other second.
“We should have sent you back the day you arrived.”
Raphael’s entire body had stiffen and his mind spun so fast he had no clue what he said next. Not until two hours later when Jake held him in their beds. He’d came back at Mr. Combs with two words. “Stuff it.” Not the most original, or hardcore, comment, but the only thing that Raphael’s rattled mind could think of. Nothing left for him to do. They’d made themselves clear. He had one hour to pack up his clothes and photos of friends and leave their home.
“Your hour is up.” Mrs. Combs said from the top of the steps.

Raphael squeezed Jake’s hand and turned toward the door. He had no idea where his life would go from there, but at least he had Jake.

Ten . . . Nine . . . Eight . . . Seven . . . Six . . . Five . . . Four . . . Three . . . Two . . . One. Back to life. He opened his eyes, finding himself right where he had been when he began counting.

“Life sucks.” He kicked his shoes to the side and yanked his shirt over his head.

A flicker of light blue caught his eye. He moved to the side of the room he’d avoided for the last five months. Since the night Detective Joe Ringer, whose dark hair matched the darkness he brought to the doorstep of unexpecting lovers.

Kyle’s firehouse caught a late shift call. Dispatch had told his team it was a simple barbeque pit fire call that filtered over onto some grass. Dispatcher screwed the team from the get-go. The fire had been for an apartment building fire started by tenant building his own fire-pit for a child’s first birthday party. Fire spilled out onto the grass and quickly spread to the building, enlightening the bottom floor. Someone had stored a propane tank on his back porch. It blew, engulfing the entire back part of the apartment. By the time Kyle’s crew arrived five other buildings in the complex had caught fire. Kyle and his crew jumped into gear, pulling one right after another. The last time Kyle went into a building he never . . . That had brought Ringer to his doorstep dropping the worse news he could have brought to anyone.

He shook the horrific memory away as he fingered the neon blue set of beads him and Kyle had gotten on their last vacation together. A better time in life. One he wished he could rewind back to each morning instead of waking up to an empty bed, that send him fast forwarding to a bleak and barren life that had become his and would remain his until the day he took his last breath.

Phrase Scene – Taken Back

Hi,

NaNoWrMo started yesterday so what a better way to kick the second day off than with a free written, non-edited phrase scene. Hope you enjoy this weeks. I sure loved writing it. In fact, I might end up incorporating this into a book at some point. I love the action in this scene.

Enjoy and remember:
Let your imagination soar when your read.

Raven threw his father’s office door open, slamming it into the wall. His father lunged to his feet, snarling.

“Son, what the hell?”

“Do not ask me that?”

“I believe I will. You barge in here in some kind of fit.”

“Where is he?”

“Who?”

His dad had retaken his seat and leaned back as he had no care in the world. The man didn’t. He had men who did his dirty work. Each problem that arose provided some low life a new job. Raven had never partaken in his father’s criminal lifestyle, which had been how his father had wanted it. His mom had made one request of her husband; keep their children out of his mobster style life.

“Do not play coy with me, old man.”

“Watch that tone of yours.”

“I’m not scared of you. Where the heck is Donavan?”

“Lord.” His father rolled his eyes. “Not my fault if you can’t keep up with your side toy.”

“He’s not a side toy. He’s my husband and I want to know what you did with him.”

“First, men don’t marry men. Second, men don’t love men. Third, I know he’s off bounds, so why are you here accusing me of something I would never do.”

Raven hadn’t thought his father would ever break his word, but two months ago he’d proven just how low he could stoop. William Calvin Thurman Senior had deemed it wise to inform the world that his middle son would be marrying some socialite from New York, even though his son had legally married his partner of ten years the moment the law legalized gay marriage. Jason had found out before Raven had. There love was solid, but such news, mixed in with knowing how persistent William Thurman Senior was, had Jason trucking it back to Texas on the first flight.

“Where is he father?”

“I do not have Jason. If he’s gone then someone . . .”

A deep cough had Raven spinning around to face his eldest brother, who had even less to do with the Thurman family than Raven did. “What are you doing here?”

“Same as you I would say, but I know a bit more than you do.”

Junior tossed him a disk. “Received this thirty minutes ago. Use dad’s computer and watch it.”

“What is it, Junior?” Raven’s father waved to his seat.

“The Rancho Gang decided it was time for payback for your buyout.”

“I’ll fucking kill them.” Raven flipped the desk over and lunged at his father. “If they hurt Jason or Rebecca you will not live to see the sun tomorrow. We clear?”

“Damn, little brother.” Junior’s words broke thru his anger fog. “You are more like the old man than I even thought.”

“Raven,” his dad held his hands up and took a step back, “calm yourself. I’ll get them both back.”

Two of the security guards came in and looked the room over. “Sir, you okay?”

“Yes. A family issue is all.”

Raven had enough standing around he dug through the pile of papers and found his father’s address book and flipped through a few pages. He ripped out the one he needed and stormed out of his office.

“Son, where you going.”

“To take them back.”

Phrase Scene - Jungle Bunny

Okay, this weeks phrase sort of just came to me while I was staring at a stuff animal my dad got me earlier in the year. It was a zebra stripe bear wearing a red shirt that says Jungle Boogie. Cutest little stuffy I’ve seen in years. (Child at heart here.) Anyway, I was sitting there trying to think about his blog post and wham Jungle Bunny.

Hope you enjoy the unedited phrase scene this week. And remember:
Let your imagination soar when you read.

Couch was going to be my best friend for a couple of whined down hours. Work had been brutal. Five fights broke out that I had to intervene in. Drunks can be either the meanest or the wimpiest. There is no in-between with them.

I stirred the soup I’d heated up and pulled down a bowl, being as quiet as I could so I didn’t wake Rebecca. She had an early shift at the hospital and would have to be up in two hours. We both work so hard to keep money coming in, which is necessary, but it sucks as well. We see little of each other and I missed our date nights.

I stumbled through the dark hallway and into the low lit living room. Step over Rebecca’s white nursing shoes and spot the bundle of blankets piled up on the couch. I groaned, hating that I’d have to fold them before I could sit down. I sat my bowl down and reached for the tiger print blanket that was my favorite and it moved.

A second and closer looks showed the top of a head with black hair. Rebecca. I stood back and stared down at my little Jungle Bunny and sighed at the contentment the sight of her filled me with. My reason for each breath I took each day, the fights I put up with, the alone time I find myself hating, was all for her, my little Jungle Bunny.

“Hey,” her half sleep filled voice had my dick stirring.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to wake you.”

“It’s fine. I was waiting up for you.”

“Jungle Bunny, you shouldn’t have.”

“I always should. You are awake for me each time I come home from work. You have me nice hot meal ready and make sure my lunch is packed. Only fair I return the favor as often as I can.”

“No need, Jungle Bunny.”

“I know, but I want to when I can. I just,” she sighed, “must have been more tired than I realized.”

I leaned over and kissed her cheek. “Go get in bed and sleep the next two hours.”

She pulled her feet up, making sure to keep the blanket over them. “Join me while you eat and brush off the work night.”

There was no refusing her, about anything. She had my number and knew that I would always do as she asked, as long as it wouldn’t hurt her. Me sitting and relaxing while she rest near me wouldn’t, so I sat and let her lay her feet across me. She reached to the coffee table and picked up my soup.

“Eat, baby.”

I took the soup, smiled and said the three words that fit, but didn’t say enough to her. “I love you.”

Flash Fiction Phrase Scene – Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend

Hi,

Hope all are enjoying the cooler weather. Rained here all weekend, but last week there was nice days to open the windows.

This weeks’ phrase isn’t really unique, but the scene I wrote for it is a bit unusual for my writing style. Hope you all enjoy it and remember:

Let your imagination soar when your read.

“Charlie! We have to go. Now!”

Danna couldn’t believe she’d gotten herself into such a predicament. Charlie, the Mayor’s daughter swore no one was home. Why had she listened to her? The girl was a class A liar with daddy issues.

Sirens blared as the police rushed to silence the alarm. Her ass was grass if she got caught and charged with breaking and entering. There might be two doing the crime, but only one would get pinched for it.

“Stop tugging on my arm. They’re not coming here. I set the alarm off a block away.”

Like she was gong to believe that. “Either get your ass a moving, or I’m leaving.”

“Such a baby.” Charlie snatched up a piled of cash from the safe. “Here, this’ll ease your nerves.”

She looked down at the stack of hundreds paper bound together. Sure was more than she’d ever seen in her life. Wasn’t worth going to jail over.

“I’m leaving, coming?”

“Not until I have what I came for.”

“Charlie, you’ve got a shit load of money, you don’t even need. What else do you want?”

The sirens were getting louder and louder. Reds and blues flashed from the main road, but instead of two wheeling into the driveway of the second biggest mansion in town they barreled by it.

“Told you. Have a bit of faith in me.” Half of Charlie’s arm disappeared into the six-foot high safe. “There’s the beauty.”

Donna stared at the rock Charlie held in front of her.

“This is worth more than either of us could spend.”

Donna stared stunned as Charlie stuffed the chunk of expensive rock into a black velvet bag she pulled from her pocket.

“Now, we can go.”

We left the way we came in and headed back to her car. Entire trip back all Donna thought of was, ‘Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend’.

Phrase Scene

This weeks’ phrase is Smile You’re On Camera

The chosen phrase came to me when I was staring at this photo my dad gave me. Hope you enjoy this week’s little scene and remember:

Let your imagination soar when you read.
Have a great week,
Julia

I’d been following the abnormal bright yellow, black spotted jaguar for three days. The animal lived up to the local’s nickname Illusive El Jaguar. Out of the three days I’d only caught two glimpse of it, but for some reason there were loads of tracks for me to follow. Kind of spooky, considering the jaguar was doing it’s best to stay out of my camera’s line of sight. I needed one lousy shot to make me a fortune. The photo would do more than give me a shit load of notice, it would seal the job with Mr. Tanker, the owner of the most sought after photography company in the United States.

“There you are.”

With the ease of walking I lifted my camera and got the shot, inwardly shouting for joy as I hit the button a second time. The bright green of the leaves stood out among the red and green flowers, but what caught my attention the most was the glowing, orange eyes surrounded by the bright yellow of the jaguar.

The jaguar let me get five more photos before the foliage coverage began to rustle. I took a breath and held it, hoping he hadn’t caught sight of me, but I had no suck luck. His eyes locked with mine, but instead of death I saw life. Illusive El Jaguar had let me take his picture; he’d graced me with his presence. I wasn’t complaining, but it did make me wonder just how much an animal could tell about a person.

The gorgeous creature took one step toward me and then the air became thick with a white fog. I swiped my hand in front of my face, but the mysterious fog didn’t fade. My hand however, hit something warm and solid. The smoothness of the object let me know it wasn’t the jaguar, which I think I would’ve rather preferred, because when the fog appeared nothing had been in front of me beside the animal.

“Miss, should I say Smile you on camera.”

The rich, husky voice had my hand flattening against what I presumed to be his chest, but words evaded me until the fog cleared and then I said, “Damn.” There was nothing else to be said for the stout, naked man standing in front of me.
