A Writer’s Journey Part 1

I’m going to attempt doing something I’ve never done before. Take someone, in this case my blog followers, on the journey of developing a new story idea. So for the next few weeks, my weekly post will be based on developing a new story. I won’t be giving away loads of information about the story I’m working on, just the basics. (Can’t be giving away all the details of a future book.)

Unless you’re a writer you don’t really stop and think about how much goes into developing a story. I mean why would you. You buy the book to relax and be entertained, not break it down. Now, if you are a writer, you know lots go into developing a story idea and then transferring it into an awesome entertainment. Each writer has his or her own process. In some cases an author will develop each story from a different approach. I know I do. But the most common way I start with is: Brainstorming.

Brainstorming for me is sitting down and writing whatever hits my head. Once again this is a method that can vary from person to person. Some may use charts in brainstorming and others may consider using predefined outlines as brainstorming. It’s a personal choice, and none are wrong if it works for you. I warn you before you read further, what you read will sound like a jumbled up mess of nonsense, but I swear it’s works for me and most of the times turns into a wonderful story.

My Brainstorming

The house is quite. Everyone is still asleep. I can hear the whirling of the fan sitting on my dresser. The light from my bedside table is casting a shadow of my lamp over my Indian picture that my dad painted. It’s irritating the shit out of me, because it’s darkening the eagle in the picture, which is soothing to see. I love the faint yellow my dad put in the eagles’ eyes. It gives the eagle a creepy yet scary look. Makes me think of a disapproving father looking over his children from above. There is my story idea.

A story that is told from a ghost POV. It would be from an omniscient POV. I don’t relish the idea of writing in that POV, so I’m going to scratch telling from the ghost POV, because I don’t think I can get deep enough into the characters doing so from that POV. I still like the idea of a father overseeing his children’s life after his death, but I’m not feeling it as strong as I was to start with. Hmmm. Okay not my story idea.

My fingers are drumming away on the silver part of my MAC. Frustration is creeping over me. My skin is crawling with ideas, but none are vivid enough in my mind that I can see where they want to go. Maybe some music will help. Maybe, I can scan my movies. I’ve not seen a good vampire story in awhile. Might do to pull out some of my old . . . Oh fudge there it is. My idea. Duh! How did I miss it?

The story need to start off with a young woman/man having been told the huge family secret right after his/her 21st b-day party ended. The father had hoped to never tell any of his children that his family descended from a family of Vampires, because he rejected their horrid way of life. Problem is his view of their life was warped because of past experience inside his old style click. The majority of Vampires live peacefully among the humans, never killing or taking from anyone other than a select few who know of their true identity and willingly gave them blood. They only need one pint of blood, animal, synthetic, or human blood a month to survive. The rest of the time they eat and drink like humans. There are a few Vampires who need emotional energy to survive, which can be gained by having sex or involving ones self into a heated discussion. This father’s bloodline fits into this anomaly and many misused the partaking of emotional energy in order to force humans into huge brawls costing people their lives in violent ways. He feared his children becoming one of these so he hoped by avoiding living in any such manner he would compress his son’s urge when and if it came to be. His son being only half energy vampire worked until the day his father tracked him down because their Click Leader, had decided it was time to choose a full partner. A full Partner choice comes from all eligible men and women in the click. The father believed his and his son’s name had been taken off the register by the previous Click Leader, but it looked as if he hadn’t been living lone Vampire status like he’d assumed, which explained why he’d coped with begin alone for so long. A vampire of any kind can live alone if they are blood bound to a click, once the blood bond is broken it become natural instinct to hunt others kin and mingle among them. Vampires, especially Energy Vampire crave a connection to their own kind. The father’s old click leader swore his blood bond with the Click had been severed, and he’d believed him, which is becoming the downfall to his plan of keeping his son in the dark to his true nature.

End of My Brainstorming

Hope your were able to follow some of that writing ramble. If not, I apologize, and hope it intrigues you enough to join me for the next segment of the Writer’s Journey Post. In it, I will move onto the next phase of my journey to create a new story. It’s gets even more interesting, because from here I have to build the world, chose the characters, and decide how much outlining, if any, will be used or if I’ll just be going by the seat of my pants.

Have a great week and hope you join me next week for the next part of the Writer’s Journey.

Remember let your imagination soar when you read and write.

Powerful Word “Skyrocket”

Hi all,

Hope you all enjoyed the story Unraveled that was posted during the April A to Z Blogging Challenge. I've decided to spend one more month on the Powerful Words Scenes, so that's what we are back to this week.

This week’s word is listed as a Greed word. I can see how the word Skyrocket fits into this category. People tend to long for rapidly growing money. Yet, a hot love scene can ramp up your libido and other areas of your body as well. Let’s see what type of scene comes to mind with the word Skyrocket.

Have a great week and remember:
Let your imagination soar when you read.

Skyrocketing Emotions

Bree’s mind drifted like a feather, which had been shot into the atmosphere. How in the world could one man fry her brain with soft, gentle touches? Each one skyrocketed her into another realm of reality. Too bad the only man who affected her in such a manner was a scumbag liar, who didn’t even care to lift one finger to help her avoid getting dragged off to jail like the everyday criminal he was.

Her mom had told her, over and over, that he’d end up destroying her life. Not to get attached to someone who wasn’t able to show emotions during a kiss. Her reply had been beyond lame. She had said, “Mom, he shows emotions when we touch, believe me.”

The comment had been a waste of time, because her super religious mother missed the point of her words. Might have been a good thing, such a comment would’ve led to a lecture on proper remarks.

“Watch your head,” a deep husky man said and helped her ease into the back of his police cruiser.

“You know I didn’t do anything.” Bree wondered how many times this officer had heard such a remark.

“Most likely not, but until we know for sure that you are who you and that you were only staying over at Mr. Tember’s house, we’ve got to take you in.”

“Who’s Mr. Tember?” Bree almost tipped to the side when she tried to move off a spring.

“The man you were snuggled up to.” The officer frowned. “You didn’t know his last name.”

“Yes, I did.” Her temper was now skyrocketing as high as Jac’s fingers had taken her earlier. “His name is Jac Tanner.”

The officer’s lifted eyebrow told Bree all she needed to know. She’d not only allowed herself to get involved with some criminal, but to be duped by him for months. Being locked in the backseat of the police cruiser might very well keep her ass out of jail. If she saw the jerk known as Jac Tanner she’d end up in jail for murdering his ass.

Powerful Word “Bloodcurdling

For this week’s Powerful Word post I’m sticking with the theme of FEAR, so I chose the word “Bloodcurdling”. The definition that I got when I looked it up was: Causing terror or horror. Indeed, a very powerful word. This one word could be used to some of the grossest attacks by humans or by what some see as monsters. (What I see as monsters doesn’t always mesh well with what others view as monstrous.) Now the after affect of a horrendous attack sure stirs similar emotions in pretty much everyone, even if they don’t show.

When an author uses the word Bloodcurdling, it allows them to form images and a connection of some sort with the character or event. Each person’s reaction may manifest and be shown in different ways. Comes right down to it, every one has a grotesque meter inside them. Take my mom and me for example, when I was around 12, the woman hated to watch any kind of horror movie. I loved them, the bloodier and more guts the better. Over the year I’ve noticed that me watching these movies no longer bother her, as bad as they did. Oh, she still dislikes them as much as ever, but she’s grown accustom to hearing them and catching glimpse of them as I enjoy my movies.

Now, I’ve chatted your ear off about the word Bloodcurdling, let’s move onto a small scene using the word.

Nightmare

Ocean waves crashed against the rocks, creating a peaceful and relaxing sound. My mind should have been a million miles away from the memory that kept me shivering under the sheets each night, but of course it wasn’t. It wanted what it always does, a way to go back and change what had happened. Make the nightmare never come to life.

Several people have given me their opinion on how to rid myself of these nightmares, but there is no way. You can’t rid your mind of the image of your family, friends, and strangers strapped into their seats as deadly, hot, red flames inched their way towards them. You can’t rid your ears of the bloodcurdling screams of the other passengers as they begged and pleaded for help. You can’t rid your body of the all consuming shakes each time you jerk straight up in your bed from seeing and hearing these things each and ever night. Nor can you eradicate the knowledge that there was not one damn thing you could have done to assist any of them, because you had been tossed from your seat after forgetting to buckle up, and pinned under a huge slab of the airplane.

Simply put, there is nothing anyone can do for me, unless they have a time machine. Then I could retract my steps, ensure, somehow, that the plane was searched for the person, who stowed away for the sole purpose of killing me. I’d gladly give myself to them in return for the lives of my family, friends and those strangers. Since my death won’t bring them back, I live for them. Or attempt to. I’m sure they would say what I do is not living, but I keep striving forwards each day, which is why I once again find myself stretched out in the bed, listening as waves create a cocoon of ease.

Hope everyone has an amazing week.
