Powerful Word “Bloodcurdling

For this week’s Powerful Word post I’m sticking with the theme of FEAR, so I chose the word “Bloodcurdling”. The definition that I got when I looked it up was: Causing terror or horror. Indeed, a very powerful word. This one word could be used to some of the grossest attacks by humans or by what some see as monsters. (What I see as monsters doesn’t always mesh well with what others view as monstrous.) Now the after affect of a horrendous attack sure stirs similar emotions in pretty much everyone, even if they don’t show.

When an author uses the word Bloodcurdling, it allows them to form images and a connection of some sort with the character or event. Each person’s reaction may manifest and be shown in different ways. Comes right down to it, every one has a grotesque meter inside them. Take my mom and me for example, when I was around 12, the woman hated to watch any kind of horror movie. I loved them, the bloodier and more guts the better. Over the year I’ve noticed that me watching these movies no longer bothered her, as bad as they did. Oh, she still dislikes them as much as ever, but she’s grown accustom to hearing them and catching glimpse of them as I enjoy my movies.

Now, I’ve chatted your ear off about the word Bloodcurdling, let’s move onto a small scene using the word.

Nightmare

Ocean waves crashed against the rocks, creating a peaceful and relaxing sound. My mind should have been a million miles away from the memory that kept me shivering under the sheets each night, but of course it wasn’t. It wanted what it always does, a way to go back and change what had happened. Make the nightmare never come to life.

Several people have given me their opinion on how to rid myself of these nightmares, but there is no way. You can’t rid your mind of the image of your family, friends and strangers strapped into their seats as deadly, hot, red flames inched their way towards them. You can’t rid your ears of the bloodcurdling screams of the other passengers as they begged and pleaded for help. You can’t rid your body of the all consuming shakes each time you jerk straight up in your bed from seeing and hearing these things each and ever night. Nor can you eradicate the knowledge that there was not one damn thing you could have done to assist any of them, because you had been tossed from your seat after forgetting to buckle up, and pinned under a huge slab of the airplane.

Simply put, there is nothing anyone can do for me, unless they have a time machine. Then I could retract my steps, ensure, somehow, that the plan was searched the person, who stowed away for the sole purpose of killing me. I’d gladly give myself to them in return for the lives of my family, friends and those strangers. Since my death won’t bring them back, I live for them. Or attempt to. I’m sure they would say what I do is not living, but I keep striving forwards each day, which is why I once again find myself stretched out in the bed, listening as creates a cocoon of ease.

Hope everyone has an amazing week.

Powerful Words “APOCALYPSE”

This week with my powerful word choice I chose to stick along the fear theme and went with Apocalypse. Apocalypse is the complete final destructions of our world or an event that is so damaging that there is no way to recover from it. The definition alone tell you why it a word that strikes fear when you hear it.

Wasn’t sure which way to go with the rest of this post so I spent a few minutes debating and then realized I wanted to try a new approach. So, I’m going to write a short little scene that incorporates the word or definition.

Reporters Are Right

Sammy sat on the hood of his car, with his long arms wound around Ariel. They stared up at the starless sky and watched for the unknown. Every newspaper reporter and television journalist had been harping on the upcoming event that was sure to be the end of the world, the one true Apocalypse. Sammy doubted it. There’d already been six other invasions of sorts that should have ended our world, as we know it, and the sun still rose each morning, the wind still blew, the skyscrapers still stood, and the traffic still blared down the highways racing to their next day of work.

“You still don’t believe do you?” Ariel ran a hand up his arm.

He shook his head no. There wasn’t reason to lie to the woman who owned his heart for the last ten years, just because she believed that tomorrow would never come.

“What would you say if I could prove to you that this time the world will come to an end?” Ariel wiggled closer to him.

“How so?” Sammy asked, playing along with his woman.

“I know, because I’ve been sent here to aid in the downfall of this world.” Ariel’s body began to shimmer a dull greenish light and he voice became rough and scratchy sounding. “There’s a total of six people going to survive the invasion of my people.”

Sammy sat there like an idiot as Ariel spoke and glowed a funky color. He should’ve been running and screaming. No, he should’ve been demanding to know who was going to survive. He did neither. He sat there and watched and waited. Either his end would come or his woman would spare his life. Either way, the reporters finally got it right. The Apocalypse had arrived. Damn, his brother was so going to rub this in his face if they survived.

Hope you enjoyed this week’s Powerful Word post. The rest of the post including Powerful Words will include a short, unedited, scene as well.

Exploration of Powerful Words

I’ve decided to do some posts (not sure how many) about Powerful Words. Yes, all words are powerful and have meaning when writing. But, there are some words that are stronger and create a more vivid imagine in a reader’s mind. These are the words that will take you from sitting on the edge of your chair in a matter of seconds to balling your eyes out from an amazing, wonderful moment. That’s what these posts will be about.

Each post related to these words will be titled Powerful Word. Hope each of you enjoy each post as they come up.

Writers use words to convey images, emotions, and to make a point. The strongest emotion that one can feel in my opinion is FEAR, because so many more can steam from that one intense feeling that we strive to keep hidden from everyone and even our own self. For example, fear can lead to anger, hatred, loathing and many more dangerous and non-dangerous emotions.

This is why it makes the word so powerful. Plus, there are just so many ways to express our fears. Probably more than one person can think of. I say this because we each react differently, after all our reactions and thinking patterns is what makes us unique.

One of the obvious ways to express fears in when you describe a woman huddled in a corner shaking like a leave. An unobvious ways or ways that may be mistaken for other emotions is: a woman standing tensely while nibbling on her lower lip. Most would hear this and think nervous or worry, but a few months back I saw a friend of my doing this and asked her what her so bothered. She went on to tell me how she was fearful of some expectant results. There was some worry mixed in there, but the emotions she pinpointed was fear. Made me realize just how differently we each react and define what is bothering us.

Remember there are more Powerful Words Post coming, so keep an eye out for them.
