A to Z Blogging Challenge word of the day - Wiccaning

Since this month’s theme is occultism and you’ve got to at least mention Wicca or something related to it when you get to the “W’s” I though todays word would be informational as well as fit into that category.

Wiccaning is the Wiccan equivalent of christening, which is a blessing of a newborn child and places the child under protections of the God and Goddess. Of course, there are different versions, but the most common one goes like this:

The child is presented to the four watchtowers, (is a manifestation of the four directional powers, usually corresponding to the elements) anointed with blessed oil or holy water and passed through the smoke of burning incense. The child is also given a secret Craft name. This name is used until the child is old enough to choose his or her own.

There’s only three days left in the challenge. Hope all comes back tomorrow to find out what “X” word I choose.

Have a great day and remember all the information for this post was found in:
The New Encyclopedia of the Occult by John Michael Greer.
This particular word was found on pages 514-515

  1. I've had friends who have had naming ceremonies for their kids, but not actual wiccanings.

  2. It sounds pretty similar to a christening, apart from the four watchtowers :) Sounds like a lovely ceremony.
