A to Z Blogging Challenge word of the day - Banishing

We’ve all heard about spirits. But have you heard of the process of causing a spirit to depart or withdraw from manifestation. If you have then you know I’m talking about Banishing.

There are at least two effective ways of banishing an entity or energy. One is, using ceremonial magic. Two is, relying on natural magic. Ceremonial magic will use the Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. Natural Magic relies on a physical substance that is held to inimical to the entities you wish to banish. For example if you are dealing with a nature-spirit you may use something with iron or steel. A noxious herb, like asafetida can be burned to drive away any kind of spirit.

There are some methods of banishing spirits that resemble an exorcism. Guess depending on how you personally interrupt the definition of the word exorcism would answer rather you believe this so or not.

Hope you guys found this post interesting and will come back tomorrow to find out what I chose that begins with the letter “C”.

  1. I've never really thought about the differences between ceremonial magic and natural magic, makes sense though. Thanks for an interesting post.

  2. I always use "Banishing" as getting a spirit out of a place and "exorcism" as getting a spirit out of a person. Obviously the exorcism is harder to do.

Great post! I am really, really loving this A to Z of Supernatural posts we are all doing.

  3. Interesting that Natural Magic takes more of a 'sympathetic' approach to banishing, using something pertinent to the spirit in question.

  4. There are many folktales about keeping fairies and other creatures away with iron. I always wondered why.
(Also, reminds me of the banishing gun in Saiyuuki... creative use of a classic idea.)
    Cheers!

  6. We had some strange happenings once and a friend of mine who is spiritually inclined suggested putting salt on all four corners of my house to banish whatever was there. I did of course because I was freaked out.
