A to Z Blogging Challenge word of the day - Isa

Today’s word Isa comes with three very similar and related meaning in three different cultures.

In old Germanic, Isa means ice. It s the eleventh run of the elder futhark. It was associated with ice, stasis and cold.

It was also called Is, in the Old English, which also meant ice. Is, was the eleventh rune in the Anglo-Saxon futhroc. Is, was associated with cold, slippery, glittering ice.

In younger futhark, it had the name Iss (Old Norse for ice). It was ninth in the sequence, and symbolized the same as elder futhark.

Isa was finally named Is by the Armanen rune system, and identified it with the concept of will. It corresponded with the goddess Freyja and the process of engendering Sagittarius. It also worked with the power from Havamal rune in calming the winds and water.

If you’d like to see a photo of the what the rune looks like you can link to one of the following websites and see a picture of it:

Hope you enjoyed today’s post and come back tomorrow to find out what letter I chose that begins with the letter “J”.

There’s loads of information out there on rune’s and other Occult information. This came from the, The New Encyclopedia of the Occult by John Michael Greer. This particular word can be found on page 245.
