Cabala

Cabala is the core elements of Western occultism. The word Cabala means tradition in Latin. The origin of it is variously given throughout old text. Some say Adam was given it by God or the angel Raziel. Some say Adam’s son Seth. Nearly every source records that Moses, while on Mount Sinai, received two different sets of teaching from God. From that point on legends claim Cabal was passed down from master to pupil.

Cabala actually emerged in Jerwish mystical groups in Provence, in the south of France, during the 11^th century C.E. They drew on an older Jerwish mystical tradition such as the Ma’aseh Merkabah, and were deeply familiar with the Neoplatonist traditions. At some point they obtained a book or collection of books that became the first major text of Cabalistic theory, the Bahir.

These texts had a new set of doctrines about the nature of God and the world, as well as a new approach to religious practice. Cabalist viewed God was utterly hidden behind the tree of veils of Ain (nothing) Ain SOph (Infinity) and Ain Soph Aur (Limbitliess Light). During manifestation, God expressed himself using the Sephiroth, ten creative powers from the divine unity and formed the Tree of Life.

From there it took on many different influential people, who made changes to it. By the last decades of the twentieth century with the first Neopgan versions of the Cabal, which many was based on the work of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which lead Cabalistic matters to become all but universal in the magical community throughout the English speaking world.
