A to Z Blogging Challenge words of the day - Lilith and Lilith

Welcome back. Hope all had a great Sunday and are ready for yet another enjoyable week of words about the Occult. Today’s word is Lilith, but there is uniqueness to it. One word that is divided into two parts.
Did you know that the word Lilith could refer to the planet or the spirit. I didn’t till I stumbled across it during my search for today’s word.

Lilith (planet) is a hypothetical dark second moon of Earth. Lilith, the planet was first proposed by 18th century astronomers because of a few sightings, believed to be asteroids. There have been Charts of Lilith drawn up, and even used by a few modern astrologers for interpretations.

Lilith (spirit) is a medieval Jewish legend about the first wife of Adam. Adam’s wife supposedly insisted on being treated as an equal and was therefore put aside and replaced by Eve. (Not sure if many people have heard much about this tale, but I have read a few stories where this was alluded to.) The origin of this first wife to Adam isn’t known, but it the legend it’s said she was late the mate to Samuel, and a demon who delighted in taking the lives of newborns and even pregnant people.

Today’s word taught me something new as well as made me wonder just how true these legends we hear are. Would love to hear what you think about the Jewish legend of Lilith. Or any other legends you’ve heard of.

Remember all this information came from:

The New Encyclopedia of the Occult by John Michael Greer.
This particular word can be found on pages 274-275.

Make sure you come back tomorrow to find out what word I chose that begins with the letter “M”.

Have a great day and remember:

  1. I've seen several vampire stories where Lilith is the first vampire rather than Kane :) I didn't know about the second moon though.

  2. Interesting. Somewhere in the recesses of my tired mind I have a recollection of the Lilith/Jewish connection. You'd be pretty p/o being replaced but not enough to hook up with someone who eats babies!

  3. A second moon - I never knew that. I do like Lilith, even though she's meant to be the mother of demons, because she rebelled, she stood up for herself.

    1. I like that fact about Lilith as well. It takes a strong person to stand up for themselves.

  4. SO COOL! I did Lilith today as well. I am so glad you talked about the moon of Lilith, something I have only briefly touched on over at my blog.

  5. I have always wanted to know more about Lilith. Why is all the women that want equality back in the day got a bad rap?

  6. Oooh, I knew about the 'spirit' Lilith, but not the moon. That's interesting... must be a story or two in there :)
