Emmanuel watched as he first ray of sunlight consumed the sky. He’d always loved earlier morning. Feeding and watering the horses before his brothers and sisters were up and running around was the best, or it had been until he met Eli at his grandfather’s bakery. Eli had come in to buy some of the famous cinnamon bread while Emmanuel had been tending the counter. The first thing Emmanuel noticed was the man’s broad chest.
Took him by surprise when his manhood perked up. Scared him more than anything. Men didn’t react to men that way. It was a sin. One that would get his entire family shunned. He’d pushed the thought of Eli away every morning for the last two months. It had begun to affect his working skills, so his father decided it was time to send him on his year away from the community that gave him time to learn how the English lived and decide which path his life would take.
“You ready, son?”
Emmanuel nodded and climbed into the buggy beside his father. “Where will you be dropping me off at?”
“A mile from town.” His father clicked his tongue, getting the horses headed in the right direction. “It will not be easy living among them. You sure you are ready for this?”
“I am.”
More than his father would ever know. He needed this time away to figure out why he was so drawn to a man. He needed time to rid himself of those  horrid thoughts. He needed to see those rich brown eyes again.
They rode in silence until the dirt road turned into pavement. His father pulled to the side and dug into his jacket pocket. “Here you go.”
Emmanuel took the bills his father handed him and looked at them.
“It’s not much, but the point of this time away is to make it on your own. This will get you started. Good luck and take care.”

Emmanuel stepped down and watched his father turn the buggy back toward their little Amish Community. When the buggy disappeared from sight, he sighed and made his way down the road. His life would be changed forever, no matter what he found when he entered town.

  1. Oh - the struggle of values (be they religious or otherwise) and sexuality makes my heart hurt! I know Emmanuel is just a character in a flash of fiction, but I wish him the best!
